External hard drive not being recognized

External hard drive is widely used by us in our daily life. Almost all of us encounter the problem of external hard drive not being recognized. “HDD not detected” means that our hard drive can’t be found by computer. We can’t see the drive letter of it in “My Computer”. Therefore, in this paper, we would like to analyze why computer is unable to detect external hard drive and how to solve this problem.

Analysis of Reasons for HDD Not Detected and Solutions to It

  1. External hard drive not being recognized- 1Insufficient Power Supply

When 2.5 inch of USB external hard disk works, hard drive and data interface are powered by USB interface. This interface can provide 0.5 A current, so, in general, there is no problem with data copying. Because pre-interface design of some old motherboards is imperfect, this may lead to insufficient power supply, causing data loss or hard drive damage. When it is damaged because insufficient power supply, our computer may be unable to detect external hard disk.

To solve the problem of external hard drive not being recognized caused by insufficient power supply, we should strengthen the power supply. 2.5 inch of external hard disk generally provides the power line which takes power from PS/2 interface or USB interface. When we move large files, we need to connect PS/2 power line in order to provide enough power for data transmission. But if we use IEEE1394 interface, we don’t need external power at all, because this interface can offer at most 1.5 A current.

There is a second way to solve the problem of external hard drive not being recognized, that is to use data line with power supply connector. Generally, power supply of USB interface is sufficient, but sometimes we may need to connect two interfaces at the same time. So, users had better buy data line with two USB interface to avoid power shortage.

When users use Windows system, power-saving mode is launched by default. This can also cause insufficient power supply of USB interface and make our computer unable to detect external hard disk. When users meet this problem, closing power saving mode can solve this problem. The following content is about some steps of closing power saving mode.

  • Right click “My Computer”, choose “Properties”, click “Hardware” and then select “Device Manager”.

  • Click “Universal Serial Bus Controllers” in the pop-up “Device Manager” window.

  • Double click a “USB Root Hub” under “Universal Serial Bus Controllers” to enter “USB Root Hub Properties” window.

  • Users should click “Power Management” and remove the tick before “Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.”. Then users can click “OK”.

After users finish modifying all USB Root Hub properties, they should restart computer. Then, they may find that USB device runs normally.

  1. External hard drive not being recognized-4HDD Not Detected Because of the Problem in Hard Drive Itself

If the problem of external hard drive not being recognized by computer exists because the disk itself goes wrong, it’s easy for us to deal with. Now, interface of most external hard drive is SATA, because it has a high data transfer rate. If HDD case can be taken down (some HDD case is sealed one-time and can’t be opened), we can directly connect it in computer case after taking it down. If HDD case can’t be taken down, we can send it to manufacturer to repair or buy a new one.

To test the “Healthy” state of HDD, here we would like to shown users a practical partition magic.

  • Launch MiniTool Partition Wizard and choose a hard drive which needs testing. Then users should click “Surface Test”.

  • Click “Start Now” and wait for the completion of the test.

This paper mainly relates to reasons that cause external hard drive not being recognized and the corresponding solutions. We hope that users can deal with the problem of HDD not detected successfully after they read this paper. What’s more, this software could also help users to partition external hard disk.
